Directing current affairs documentaries for this legendary series. Specific films include documentaries on Watergate, Idi Amin, Thalidomide, Northern Ireland etc. 1970
As a Weekend World producer director I worked alongside many reporters of immense integrity including John Fielding, Mary Holland and Julian Manyon. Led by John Birt now Lord Birt the series was both controversial in its production values and in its presentation there being many resignations from the original team. Many complaints were made that the facts were manipulated to suit the graphics; the input of independent contributors manipulated to suit the story. And the politics of the Liberal Democrats. Nevertheless and often despite the bullying of top management many significant films were made notably the Thalidomide story which exposed the Distillers Company’s attempts to delay a pay out to those suffering from the drugs they produced. David O’Connel the head of the IRA was interviewed on the run in Dublin by Mary Holland. This was a programme I directed only to find myself the following week at the heart of Protestant Para–militarism in Vanguard HQ surrounded by armed and angry men who hated the programme I had made the week before. It was excellent training working each week often on highly charged and litigious and dangerous material. This meant travelling, filming and editing the two hour live show often pulling the inserts together with minutes to spare.
