Hope

HOPE, the film begins with Evan, an itinerant Welsh doctor, who works for Medicine Sans Frontiers, helping a sick African man off the streets of a small central African town into a hospice where he meets Hope who is a 38-year old nurse from Madagascar.

Hope is relatively happy with her hard life in the Congo.  She is very protective of her 12-year old daughter, Bantu. However, she has a recurring dream of a violent past.

Evan has an interest in African art. Hope is intrigued by his Welsh language, culture and rugby. Rugby is a recurring theme throughout the film.

He operates on her scarred face, she heals and he courts her. Local freedom fighters take Evan away to look after their wounded and Hope and Bantu are briefly interrogated and violated by the hostile National Congolese Army.

Evan rescues Hope and Bantu. They return to their Mission Hospital and rebuild it.

Hope shifts between being a tough nurse and a soft but always reluctant lover. There is an undercurrent of her past life that troubles her. In their lovemaking, Evan recognises her secret pain.

From this beginning the film will take many unexpected turns. It is a road movie about Identity and Innocence; and about the inspiration and the encouragement Hope and Bantu get from a Welsh rugby player.
